Rangers

The Last Jedi

The Rangers are a resistance group associated with Toprawa whose possible assistance becomes a difficult strategic question for Jax Pavan. He is urged to enlist them for the effort to rescue Thi Xon Yimmon, but worries that a Ranger may already have betrayed his allies to Darth Vader. Their significance in the account lies in that unresolved tension: the Rangers could strengthen the rescue, yet approaching them might expose loyal fighters to danger.

Identity and Position

The Rangers are identified as a group Jax and his allies could return to Toprawa to enlist. I-Five describes them as people the team can trust, while Jax’s later reference to a possible betrayal from among the Toprawa resistance fighters places them within a vulnerable network of opposition to the Empire. The evidence does not describe the Rangers’ organization, membership, leadership, or methods; it establishes their importance through the question of whether they can safely be approached.

That question arises when Jax and his companions are already short of dependable support. He has concluded that the resistance fighters on Toprawa have been put at greater risk than they should have been, and he cannot dismiss the possibility that betrayal came from that quarter. At the same time, the suspicion does not settle into certainty. Something about the idea troubles him, but he cannot identify what. The Rangers therefore remain neither confirmed allies nor proven enemies: they are a potential source of help clouded by an unanswered breach of trust.

Trust Under Suspicion

The prospect of seeking their aid emerges while Jax is considering how to reach and rescue Thi Xon Yimmon alive and intact. I-Five proposes returning to Toprawa and enlisting the Rangers, explicitly distinguishing them from Black Sun. Jax does not treat the two options as equivalent. He knows he cannot trust Black Sun and refuses to rely on it; with the Rangers, his uncertainty is more painful because he cannot confidently trust all of them, but also cannot treat every one as untrustworthy.

That distinction defines the practical problem. If Jax approaches the Rangers without knowing whether a traitor is among them, he may give that person influence over the plan and place loyal fighters in harm’s way. Yet refusing all contact would mean discarding a possible source of support because of a suspicion that remains unproved. The group’s value is inseparable from the risk of trying to assess it: asking for aid might expose the very people the rescue operation needs to keep safe.

The Rescue Debate

I-Five raises the Rangers’ assistance again when Jax is considering the danger of his own involvement. The suggestion that he could get help from them is immediately qualified by Jax’s insistence that the approach carries inherent dangers. It is not a simple disagreement over whether the Rangers are useful. Jax’s concern is that involving them under uncertain conditions could turn a rescue effort into another threat to the resistance network.

I-Five also offers an alternative: Jax could remain on Mandalore while Den Dhur and I-Five go to Kantaros Station. Jax rejects that arrangement as unacceptable and continues toward the Laranth’s boarding ramp. His refusal establishes that he will not leave his companions to undertake the mission without him. It does not resolve whether the Rangers will be enlisted; rather, it keeps that question within a larger choice about how to protect Yimmon, the team, and the people who might assist them.

Narrative Significance and Limits

The Rangers’ role is built around uncertainty rather than a demonstrated alliance or a confirmed act of treachery. Jax’s hesitation grows from concrete stakes: the Toprawa resistance has already been endangered, and a compromised approach could put loyal fighters in a traitor’s reach. His difficulty is not simply deciding whom he likes or trusts; it is deciding how to act when both trust and suspicion could expose others to harm.

The account also mentions an Antarian Ranger as the intended target of a meaningful medallion worn by Laranth during a disguised meeting in Big Woolly. It does not establish that this individual belongs to the Toprawa Rangers, so the reference does not clarify the organization’s membership or structure. For the Toprawa group itself, the decisive fact remains the unresolved possibility of betrayal. The Rangers represent help Jax may need, but cannot safely assume he can accept.
